In the last issue of “Delicious Design,” I talked a little about the history of Art Deco and some fine examples of the style in Los Angeles. It was a preview to my upcoming “Walk, Talk & Experience Santa Monica’s Art Deco Heritage” on Sunday, Sept. 15.

Hotel Shangri-La’s lobby

This free event has a limited capacity, so RSVP to me now at eschapa@adelphia.net. It’s sponsored by the historic Hotel Shangri-La in Santa Monica, a beautiful example of Streamline Moderne, and will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Refreshments in the Shangri-La penthouse will be included.

This will be the first of four such talks to be led by me and my dear friend and architectural expert Bret Parsons. We’ll give you a history of the property and a glimpse at the many Hollywood stars of the 30s and 40s who frequented it. We’ll also take a walk in the area to show you some fine examples of Art Deco near and around the Third Street Promenade.

Later lectures with guest speakers will cover interiors, restoring historic properties, and Art Deco furniture and arts.

A royal mistress imprint was made at Château de Chenonceau.

A week later, I will be talking about another favorite topic of mine – royal mistresses (where has all that elegance and tasteful intrigue gone, I often lament). More specifically, “The Role of the Royal Mistress in the Design of French Palaces.”

This will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 at the lovely Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. All proceeds of this “Tea & Talk” event will support the restoration of Greystone. For information, contact Friends of Greystone at (310) 286-0119 or friends@greystonemansion.org
