The reign of Napoleon I heralded a new era of richness and elegance in a long history of French design.  After the French Revolution, the country went through significant changes until Napoleon brought stability to the country and a flair for the arts back to into fashion.   Tracing design history from the time after the revolution through the Directoire and Consular periods, the Empire style of Napoleon incorporated Roman, Greek, and Egyptian design that reflected the campaigns he embarked upon to conquer the European continent.  The influence of the Empire style was felt in other countries’ design, including England, Germany, and America.  This course will incorporate discussion of architectural and interior design, furniture, and decorative arts.
