Schapa’s Lavishly Illustrated UCLA Lecture is May 18

Thomas Hope Egyptian SofaLos Angeles (May 6, 2013) – Robert Adam and Thomas Chippendale were giants in the design of English furniture and decorative arts over a 300-year period beginning from the reigns of Henry VIII through George IV.

These two designers – along with John Nash and Thomas Hope – are the focus of a lecture and lavish slide presentation on “English Furniture & Decorative Arts: From Renaissance through Regency” on Saturday, May 18 at UCLA Extension. Eleanor Schrader Schapa – an award-winning Beverly Hills architectural and interior design historian and consultant – will give the special presentation.

“We will take a look at the popular styles and design influences of the period from about 1500 through the early 1800s, including Tudor, Jacobean, William & Mary, Queen Anne, Georgian and Regency styles,” Schapa said. “Aside from the extraordinary influence that designers such as Chippendale had, we will examine the social and political influences on their designs. Construction techniques and types of materials – including fabrics, woods and decorative elements – will also be discussed.”

Schapa is an award-winning architectural and interior design historian and consultant who lectures worldwide on the history of architecture, interiors, furniture, and decorative arts.  She has been named a Distinguished Instructor by UCLA Extension, where she teaches the history of architecture and interior design.  She has served as a Design Review Commissioner for the City of Beverly Hills, and she is a member of the boards of directors of the Beverly Hills Historical Society, John Lautner Foundation and Malibu Adamson House Foundation.

The presentation will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1010 Westwood Blvd., Room 313, Westwood. Cost of the lecture is $85. Click here to register.
