Itinerary
Historic Hudson River Valley Tour  
 

Join Dr. Philip Zimmerman, museum consultant and American furniture expert, and Eleanor Schrader Schapa, design historian and lecturer, for an incredible journey to the historic Hudson River Valley in upstate New York. Highlights of the tour include Lyndhurst (Jay Gould’s Gothic Revival mansion), lunch in antique-filled Sleepy Hollow, Boscobel (a premier example of Federal style architecture), Olana (the home of Hudson River School painter Frederic Church), the Frederick J. Johnston Museum (“A Small Winterthur on the Hudson”), Henry Hobson Richardson’s magnificent Albany City Hall, accommodations and dinner at the Thayer Hotel at West Point, and much, much more!

Sunday, June 16

5:00 p.m. We’ll converge at the grand lobby of the luxurious Waldorf-Astoria Hotel where we’ll meet each other and discuss our plans for the next few days.

6:00 p.m. We’ll stroll a few blocks to Eleanor’s apartment where we’ll enjoy some cocktails and hor d’oeuvres before our welcome dinner at Nino’s Positano, an Italian restaurant just a few steps away. Website

Monday, June 17


8:30 a.m.
Philip and Eleanor will commandeer private shuttles that will pick us up at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and whisk us away on our journey to upstate New York!

10 a.m. We’re scheduled for our first tour at Lyndhurst, the magnificent Gothic Revival home to New York Mayor William Paulding and later to railroad magnate Jay Gould. The house is now a National Trust Historic Site. Website


11:45 a.m.
Depart Lyndhurst for Sleepy Hollow.


12 p.m.
We’ll arrive in the legendary town of Sleepy Hollow, where we’ll stop for lunch and enjoy being in the site of inspiration for Washington Irving’s novel by the same name.

1:30 p.m. Depart Sleepy Hollow for Boscobel.

  

2:30 p.m. Our next stop is Boscobel, a premier example of Federal Style architecture with outstanding examples of Duncan Phyfe and related Federal period furniture. Website


4:30 p.m.
We’ll depart Boscobel for our accommodations for the evening, The Thayer Hotel at West Point, overlooking the Hudson River. This Gothic Revival-style granite structure is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Website


7:00 p.m
.
We’ll have dinner in the beautiful dining room at The Thayer Hotel. Afterwards you might enjoy strolling about the grounds near West Point Military Academy.

Tuesday, June 18


8:30 a.m. After breakfast at The Thayer Hotel, we’ll leave for our day’s journey.

9:30 a.m.
We’ll arrive at Locust Lawn, built in 1814 for Colonel Josiah Hasbrouck and occupied by his direct descendents until it and its many original furnishings became a museum in 1958. It is an extraordinary time capsule. Website

11:15 a.m.
Depart for Clermont, where we will have a box lunch on the grounds at about 12:15.

1:15 p.m.
We’ll tour Clermont, the manor house of Robert Livingston and Robert, the son, who helped draft the Declaration of Independence. This important house contains significant 18th and 19th century furnishings. We will be joined by David Bayne, the New York State Historic Site head furniture conservator. Website

2:45 p.m. Depart for Edgewater.

3:00 p.m. We’ll arrive at Edgewater, a beautiful 1825 house with full-portico front on the shore of the Hudson River, probably built by John R. Livingston and restored in the 1970s by Richard Jenrette, who has added many original and appropriate furnishings since.  Website

5:00 p.m.
Depart for the evening’s accommodations in Hudson. Dinner on your own. Hudson is well-known for its antique shops, and you will enjoy window shopping in this delightful town.

Wednesday, June 19

 

8:00 a.m. After breakfast, we’ll depart for Olana.

9:00 a.m. One of the highlights of our trip, Olana was the home of Hudson River artist Frederic Church, who transformed his house from a Richard Morris Hunt-designed “cottage” of 1861 to an exotic, Persian-style mansion, completed in 1891.  Website

11 a.m. Depart Olana for our tour of Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site.

12 p.m. Tour of Schuyler Mansion, the Georgian home of Philip J. Schuyler, Revolutionary War general and United States Senator.  Website

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Lunch in Albany.

3 p.m. Tour of Albany City Hall, a magnificent example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. Website

4:30 p.m. Depart for the evening’s accommodations in Albany. Dinner on your own. Albany has a vibrant night life, with plays, music, galleries, and shopping

Thursday, June 20

9:30 a.m. After breakfast, we’ll depart for the Fred J. Johnston Museum.

10:30 a.m. Tour of Fred J. Johnston Museum, a circa 1812 Federal style house that was home to antiques dealer who amassed a collection of 18th and early 19th century furnishings and decorative arts. Website

12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Lunch at the Hoffman House Tavern.  Website


1 p.m.
Depart for New York City.

Costs for the tour:

The cost per single is $2,050, and if you are sharing a room, $1,750 per person. This includes three nights’ hotel accommodations (June 17, 18, and 19), Sunday dinner, Monday dinner, Tuesday breakfast and lunch, Thursday lunch, all museum and tour admissions, speakers’ honorariums, and van transportation Monday through Thursday.

Everyone will make their own airline reservations and hotel accommodations for pre- and post-trip dates.

The vans will deliver us to New York City around 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 21.
