The late 19th century saw La Belle Époque, or “The Beautiful Era” in France bring about a splendid period of opulence and luxury in design and craftsmanship in the Art Nouveau style. Artists drew inspiration from flowing organic forms, evolving into elegant designs that united natural forms with an undercurrent of dreamlike and nightmarish narratives. This course will incorporate architectural and interior design, furniture, decorative arts, graphic arts, and jewelry, created by some of the most imaginative artists in European history. Additionally, interpretations of the Art Nouveau style in other countries such as Belgium, Spain, and Latvia will be discussed.
